The month of April is in the middle of the spring season and with the weather starting to warm up and the day light hours lasting longer.
The pest issues that you are most likely to start to encounter in the spring season are listed below.
Top 5 Spring Pests - SW19 Pest Control
Ants
Ants will enter homes foraging for food especially sweet substances, to take back to their nests.
Ants can be present in very large numbers.
Once ants discover a reliable food source they are likely to continue to keep returning to that place.
So good housekeeping will help in not attracting them, clean up any spilt fruit juices, regularly sweep debris off the kitchen floor and don’t leave food laying about.
Finding the actual nest can be difficult especially if it’s under the house foundations / walls or in the ground.
We have access to a range of professional grade / licensed users only treatments to eliminate ant colony’s.
Wasps
This is the time of year when the nests are just starting and the numbers are low.
It is the Queen wasps that come out in spring from hibernation over the winter months and start to build the nest.
The Queen is on her own until the first batch of grubs turn in to adults these are then the workers.
Here in the UK the most likely wasps you will encounter are,
The common wasp: Vespula Vulgaris or the
German wasp: Vespula Germanica
These species are very similar in size and colour predominantly yellow with black markings.
Wasp treatment should be left to a professional as to avoid being stung.
Contact us if you need a wasp nest treated.
Cluster Flies
These are dark greyish flies about 8mm long with yellowish hairs on their back with overlapping wings.
They re-emerge in spring to seek out egg laying sites outside.
A large amount of cluster flies have a distinct smell.
You can vacuum up most of the cluster flies or use an aerosol fly killer to deal with small numbers.
If the numbers are too great for you to deal with, then contact us and we would use insecticidal foggers or smoke generators to clear heavy infestations.
Bees
There are over 250 species of bees in the uk.
Bumble Bees, Mason Bees, Mining Bees, these are just a small part of a big family.
Bees play a very important part in pollinating, helping plants grow, breed and produce food.
They do so by transferring pollen between flowering plants and thereby help keep the life cycle of the planet going.
If you see a swarm of bees in or on your property then they are most likely honey bees.
Honey Bees
Contact a Beekeeper and they are usually more than happy to come and take a swarm of honey bees away.
The process involves the beekeeper locating the queen within the swarm, all of the bees will then navigate towards the pheromone that the queen emits, and the beekeeper will collect the bees.
Usually if the beekeeper can locate the queen then the swarm can be taken and relocated.
The problem starts when the swarm is in a difficult to reach location and the queen can’t be located / collected.
If you are unfortunate to have a honey bee swarm take up residence in a cavity wall or they need to be removed from a difficult to reach location or they are causing a public health hazard then unfortunately the only course of action is to destroy the colony.
This is always the last resort for Bees but if they are needing to be removed for Health and Safety / Public Health issues then they can be legally destroyed.
Carpet & Clothes Moths
Due to central heating in homes, clothes and carpet moths can be a year round problem.
Spring is the natural time that moths start to emerge to mate and lay eggs.
Moths like clothes, fabrics and carpets and prefer natural fibres such as wool, fur, cotton and silk.
Moths will eat pet fur and also eat through synthetic materials to burrow in to natural fibres underneath.
Moths are notoriously hard to get rid of.
It’s important to act as soon as you suspect that you have a moth problem, as they can cause very expensive damage.
A spray or fogging treatment can be carried out using professional grade treatments or a heat treatment can be used on smaller isolated areas.
Contact us now if you think that you have a moth problem and want it treated.
